Another Day Another Dollar
Well, I didn't get quite as much done today as I would have liked. I mean, I still got a great deal done, just not exactly as much as I would have liked. I had to go to town to visit the Western Union and pick up a little more money. No matter how quick your trip is (and mine was quick) a trip to town eats a hole in your day when you don't have your own car.
For one thing you have to combine trips. While I was in town I went to Western Union, Safe Haven Realty, the National Bank of Dominica, the Ministry of Immigration, and Astaphans. Of course, I got a lot done. I picked up my money, made some arrangements about the down payment on the other house, found out what I needed to open a bank account, got the paperwork we needed to apply for residency, and picked up a few groceries. Plus I took some pictures.
OK, I took a lot of pictures. One of the interesting things is the amount of construction going on. From what I can see around here it's universal. Of course, I haven't gotten to see much of the island yet. Once we have a car that's going to change, Lord willing.
Either way, I got some work done before I left and got some more done when I got back. I didn't feel like pulling out my full workload so I jumped on Civ 5 for a while instead. Of course, today, for the first time, I was able to use Civ inspiration in WoM. It wasn't anything earth shattering, it just had to do with how roads are built. Still, something useful is something useful.
I only played for about an hour and jumped back on my maze generator. In roughly an hour I added a mini-map that shows your current location. It's a bit of a sidetrack from my regular work, but it's allowing me to warm up before I start working on the D20 System for WoM next week. I had been out of programming for almost two months all things considered and it's best if I crack my mental knuckles before I really start working on the game again.
Anyway, at the end of the hour the kids were ready for the Sea.
One thing I forgot to mention is that while I was up town I bought a bag of candy. It was EC$2.60/US$0.96 and I think it was worth it.
Ginger toffee :) It's like chewing ginger ale. Rachel also delved into deserts tonight. While we were at the sea she made fresh brownies using some coco powder we had bought earlier. They are honestly some of the best brownies I've ever eaten. Yet again, I want to make my own coco powder down here. In addition she made some chocolate cookies. I haven't eaten one yet, but I expect they're good.
When I got back home I worked on the maze generator some more, then I played Tanks, then I worked on the generator again. My mini-map now has a “fog” covering it that is “wiped away” as you explore. I'm really considering trying to put together a whole “Procedural Generation” asset that I can sell in the Unity store. Every little bit helps:)
Anyways, as is often the case by the time I post my blog, Rachel and I are getting ready for TV time. As always I'll take the opportunity to wish you all a very good night from Dominica!

Really loved the pics tonight. Made we want to go shopping in Roseau. Also, you got some good close ups of the kids. Love you all and hope to see you before too long. Gabriel and Alec are chaffing at the bit! Oh, and loved the pics of the house you will (hopefully) soon be moving into.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, but a lot of the vendors of the road side markets don't want you taking pictures. It's bizarre. It's like they don't get the idea of "free advertising", lol.
