So Much To Do

OK, so we FINALLY got to town today. I knew it was going to be an insane day and it was. I am exhausted and this blog is going to be brief. We had to take all the kids with us, just so they could walk in the immigration office and be seen by the immigration officer. Now, as we don't have a car of our own yet we can't just make a trip up to town for one purpose. When we go we have to get things done.

The morning started with Dilian saying that he had gotten in touch with brother David who lives in Canefield and who has a full sized bus. He had the time to take us into town today and wait around for us to take us back. Needless to say that was great news. Plus he “charged” us a very low rate. (I'm not sure how good his gas mileage is or if he made any money out of the day or not.) Either way, it was good of him to volunteer and come out to pick us up. Obviously it was very helpful of brother Dilian to come as well, but all of you already know how much we owe him and the congregation at Scotts Head.

As we made the trip from Pond Casse to Roseau I took a number of photos.

Once we got to town we bought ferry tickets at Whitchurch while the kids waited patiently.

After that we went and took care of getting our extensions filed for. It took more than an hour, but all things considered it went fairly quickly. It was very nerve wracking because we'd never done it before. Now that we've been trough it, however, it's a piece of cake. Still, I think we'll apply for residency before we need to file for another extension.

Once that was taken care of we headed to Astaphan's to pick up a few groceries. We got some tinned meat. It's not great, but it's better than nothing. We also got a few cans of mixed vegetables. We've got to start working more local vegetables into our dishes. Still, canned vegetables are better than no vegetables. After we were done there we took the kids to the botanical garden to wait with Rachel while I finished everything else I had to take care of.

Once they were there I headed to the Lime office to get the Internet transferred into my name. Thank the Lord I finally got it taken care of. While I was doing that Dilian went to pay last month's water bill for me. After I was done at Lime I went to Save-A-Lot to get pizza fixins. I also grabbed some macaroni and cheese for EC$1.99 a box. It seemed like a pretty good price. Rachel doesn't really like boxed macaroni and cheese, but it's better than nothing.

Anyways, I could go on and on. I had a lot of little tasks to take care of. They weren't very interesting when I was doing them, I can't imagine they'd be interesting to read about.

Once we finally got home Alec and I fried up some canned chicken “luncheon meat” and made grits for dinner. The meat wasn't too bad. It tasted a lot like Vienna sausages to me. I was just glad to get a bit of meat. Lord willing we'll be able to get a fridge in the next couple of weeks. Of course, we also want a car and a dryer. I think we are probably going to end up wanting a freezer as well...

Rachel is working in the kitchen making brownies as I'm typing this. I want to start adding cakes and pies to our dessert lineup as well, but I feel certain they will come in time. For the moment, I'm tired and so I'm going to bring this to a close. Once again, goodnight from Dominica!

  1. I loved all the pics and glad Rachel and the kids could hang out at the Botanical Gardens while you did your running around. Now, were you able to file for an extension for Alec and Gabriel too? We forgot to have the new custody paper ready for Joshua to sign today and anyway, we wouldn't have had time to get it notarized.

You should have just bought some fresh meat for today to cook as soon as you got home, or was the trip so long you would be afraid the meat would spoil on the way home? Don't they have coolers and ice in Roseau? I used a cooler for a refrigerator for weeks one time, long ago. Also, people used to use the creek as a refrigerator to keep butter and milk from spoiling. I think you said the creek water is COLD. You'd have to put the stuff in something that the crabs and/or other animals couldn't get open, but it would work!

    Love you all,
    Mom

    1. Alec and Gabriel won't need an extension for about five more months. I hope to apply for residency before then :)

We could have gotten fresh meat, but I just didn't feel like dealing with it. And we probably could use the river for a fridge. The water is certainly cold enough. However, a good rain storm might wash your "fridge" down the river, lol.

  2. You keep adding to your moral debt. Make sure Ben understands this as he is your first born. The Bellots, Freddy and now David all can lay claim to Ben. Teach him how to drive a van and to preach so that he can pay off all that you owe. By the time he is 50, he should be a free man.

Seriously, without the great friends that you have in Dominica, I guess all of you would have been on a homemade raft paddling back to the USA.

Apparently, Dominicans truly are as friendly as they are touted to be.

    1. Without the Church here we would probably have been on a plane back the US within a couple of weeks. They really are great people.

I may be able to work off some of my moral debt by doing computer work for them, lol.

  3. OK, I didn't really appreciate the river until your Aunt Sarie commented about it. Man it is NICE! How much is on the property that you are on?

    1. There's a river that runs across the entire front of the property and a seasonal river that basically runs the length of the back. There's plenty of river if that's what you want :)

  4. Spam a lot is not only a Monty Python musical but a good source of protein.
    Do they sell Spam?
Titus looks like he was having a good time.
    The kids look great.
    Love you all, Aunt Sarie

    1. You can buy Spam all over the place. It's like EC$18.00 a can, so we don't buy it, but I guess the rich folks do, lol.

Titus is happy here. He's lived in Dominica longer than anywhere else, lol. And, yes, the rest of the kids are doing well.

      We all love you too!

  5. Glad you were finally able to get to town. Sounds like you really had a busy day and looks like it was a fun day for all the younger ones. Hopefully all the Internet problems are corrected now that you have it in your name. Thanks again for the blog. I really enjoy the pictures.
