Getting Things Done!

Although we certainly got a great deal done today, I wish I had been able to get more done with work. As almost all of you know the Internet is critical to my work. In fact, we shell out the extra to get the full 8 Megabit service down here. Every time I have to wait for a page to load it slows my work down and makes me less efficient. In the long run that costs money. So, we pay for a higher speed so I can get more done. It's great when it works. However, at the moment our Internet speed is 0.37 Megabits. That's only a little over 21 times as slow as it's supposed to be... Needless to say that makes getting my job done difficult.

I called the Lime office this morning and they are going to send a man around again. I'm afraid he's not going to be able to do anything, but we have to keep trying. I can't just give up when things are running this slowly. Plus, of course, it makes uploading pictures an excruciating experience. At least when you're uploading them on the PC you watch TV on. I have to wait until all the pictures are up before we can even attempt to watch anything on this crawling connection. I think I may just hook up the DVD drive on my computer tonight...

Anyways, brother David sowed up at about 9:30AM and we all piled on the bus and headed to town We had a number of stops to make. I needed to go by Whitchurch to see if any of our ferry tickets were refundable. They weren't... That may end up standing out as the least satisfying US$1000.00 I spent in my life. It was for tickets I never used...

I also had to go by Lime and cancel my account because they never changed things over to my name anyway. I hoped to get my deposit back today, but I couldn't. I can get it next week...

My next stop was Mrs. Felix's office. I hoped to get back the remainder of the deposit from the first house we stayed in here. She's out of the country at the moment, so I couldn't....

In some ways it could have been a frustrating day really... Still, brother David waited patiently while we were doing all this. I got the Internet and electric bills paid (the electric was like EC$556.00 which is US$208.00 and we have a water pump. In the US our bill was around $350.00-$450.00 a month). We stopped at five different stores and got loaded up with the supplies we would need for the month, so that was a blessing.

We don't have a great deal of money to last until next month, but Lord willing we won't need it. The bills are paid and when we go to town next month we only need to get about two weeks worth of groceries. Plus, by that time I ought to be able to go around collecting up some of those deposits :)

That's really it for today. I've got work I may try to get done tonight, but with crawling Internet I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I have to spend tomorrow writing up a document describing Worlds of Magic that we're sending to a publisher. Be praying for me. If we get picked up by the publisher that's looking at us the game is almost certainly going to be a big hit. I've been working on this for around eighteen months now and I really want to see the game succeed.

In any event, it's late and I'm tired. So, as always, goodnight from Dominica!

  1. Loved the pics and especially since it's so hard to get them uploaded---or time consuming. Glad you had a good day in town. Did y'all buy that hammock in town today?

The Lord has his reasons for everything. I'll be praying about the internet speed, but still, just take each day at a time and make the most of it!

    Love you all very much,
    Mom E.

  2. I like the pink blanket hammock and it looks like Felicity does to. The reason for the higher electric bills here in the USA may have something to do with the electric refrigerator, freezer, water pump, elec dryer, air conditioner and fans in a big house. Ours was only $151.58 this month. Enjoyed the pictures and sorry the internet there isn't as good as it was here.

    1. Well, we're using an electric stove here. We have something like 7 or 8 computers running, some of them 24 hours a days. We have cell phones, kindles, etc. Still, not needing an AC makes a big difference. You can stay cool for cheap here. :)

Plus, of course, they're upgrading their power plant now. In 2015 the rates are supposed to drop a lot.
